Women’s team coach Choton informed that Shopna expressed discontent over lack of matches in recent times

Bangladesh national women's team forward Sirat Jahan Shopna has decided to retire from professional football at the age of only 22 due to lack of competitive action.

“I have decided to bid farewell to professional football,” announced the Bashundhara Kings striker in a social media post Friday.

“I'm lucky to have played professional football for almost eight years. I achieved a lot during my career. I thank and express gratitude to Allah for everything,” she added.

Shopna didn't explain the reason behind early retirement.

She couldn't be reached over phone for comment.

Women's team head coach Golam Rabbani Choton informed that Shopna expressed discontent over lack of matches in recent times.

“She [Shopna] took a leave for two days yesterday [Thursday]. Before that, she didn't want to continue despite being in peak form. We tried to convince her as she is a youngster,” Choton told Dhaka Tribune.

“She said there hasn't been any international match in the last eight months and also talked about the uncertainty over women's franchise league.”

Shopna has 10 international goals to her name, including four at the last SAFF Championship in Nepal in September 2022 where Bangladesh women's team won their maiden trophy.

Since then, Bangladesh have not played a single international game.
