Abahani trounce Russel to set up final with Mohammedan

Abahani will take on Mohammedan in the grand finale on May 30 in Comilla

Defending champions Dhaka Abahani Limited smartly reached the final of the Federation Cup Football eliminating Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra 3-0 in the second semi-final at Shaheed Dhirendranath Dutta Stadium in Comilla Tuesday afternoon.

Abahani led 1-0 at the first half interval.

Local forward Foysal Ahmed Fahim struck twice for the popular sky-blue Dhanmondi outfit in the 51st and 71st minutes and was adjudged player of the match.

Russian World Cupper, Costa Rican booter Daniel Colindres netted the other goal for Abahani in the 38th minute.

Record 12-time Federation Cup champions Abahani will face their old rivals and 10-time winners Dhaka Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited in the final on May 30 at 3:15pm, also in Comilla.

The traditional black and whites, a mid-table team this season, managed a final berth after 14 years shocking league champions Bashundhara Kings 2-1 in the first semi-final last Tuesday at Sheikh Fazlul Haque Moni Stadium in Gopalganj.

In their last Federation Cup final in 2009, Mohammedan emerged champions beating their arch-rivals Abahani 4-1 in the tie-breaker.

The third-place deciding match between two losing semifinalists - Bashundhara and Sheikh Russel - will be held on May 23 in Gopalganj.

Earlier in the quarter-finals, Bashundhara eliminated Muktijoddha Sangsad Krira Chakra 3-1, Abahani defeated Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club 1-0, Mohammedan outplayed Chittagong Abahani Ltd 4-1 while Sheikh Russel beat Rahmatganj Muslim Friends Society 1-0.
