Away form eating away Man Utd’s UCL prospects

Compared to 12 victories, only 1 defeat and 3 draws at home, there have been 8 losses away, 3 stalemates and 7 wins – none against top-9 opposition

Update : 10 May 2023, 09:33 PM

It was truly a memorable occasion for David de Gea when he stepped onto the London Stadium last Sunday for the Premier League match against West Ham United.

After 12 years playing in goal for Manchester United, the Spaniard created a slice of history as he became the most capped keeper for the Red Devils, featuring in his 540th game and surpassing Alex Stepney.

It is highly unlikely though that the shot-stopper would look back to this day with much pride.

A harmless Said Benrahma shot in the 27th minute should have been a regulation save for the experienced netminder but De Gea fluffed his lines and made a mess of himself as the ball deflected off his hand and into the net.

United would go on to lose 1-0 and give Liverpool further impetus as the two arch-rivals battle it out at the business end of the season for a Champions League place.

Having played 34 matches, United are currently fourth with 63 points, one point ahead of Liverpool, who have played a game more.

Even seventh placed Brighton and Hove Albion (55 points from 32 outings) will be brimming with hope after United's latest setback.

This was the second time in four days that United shot themselves on the foot.

What was supposed to be an innocuous corner was instead handled inside the United box by defender Luke Shaw away to Brighton last Thursday in the dying stages of the tie, resulting in a spotkick after VAR intervention.

Alexis Mac Allister made no mistake from the penalty spot.

However, it is not only the last two defeats but United's hot-and-cold away performances throughout the season which threaten to derail their top four ambitions.

The Old Trafford outfit's home and away league form has been contrasting under Erik ten Hag.

Compared to 12 victories (against title contenders Manchester City and Arsenal and European hopefuls Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur), only one defeat and three draws at home, there have been eight losses away, three stalemates and seven wins – none against top-nine opposition.

Whereas United scored 28 times at home and conceded only eight, they have found the back of the net on seven less instances and leaked 33 away.

Back in March, Ten Hag had said, “For me, it's no different - the pitch is the same size everywhere, there are three referees, there's a fourth official, the ball is round, there's air in the ball.

"So, we have to play and to make it our game and that (winning away at a top club) is the next step we have to make then."

Sadly for United fans, there has been no upturn in fortunes since then against formidable Premier League opposition at their backyard.

Final stretch of the season

The next four league games will shape the northwest side's forthcoming season.

Anything less than a Champions League berth will be catastrophic for a club of United's pedigree.

Thankfully for Ten Hag's charges, three of those four matches are at home.

Perhaps home comforts might just take United over the line but surely there will be some serious introspection come the end of the season with regards to their away form.

For Ten Hag knows sustained excellence on the road is a prerequisite if the current United lot are to be taken seriously.
