Croatia stunned five-time winners Brazil with a 4-2 win on penalty shootout after the 120-minute extra time ended 1-1 in the first World Cup quarter-final at Education City Stadium, Al Rayyan in Doha.
Dominik Livakovic made a brilliant save to deny Rodrygo's attempt which was Brazil's first in the shootout before Marquinhos failed to convert his chance too.
The 90-minute stipulated time earlier ended goalless before Neymar netted a spectacular goal to take the lead at the end of the first half of 30-minute extra time.
Petkovic equalized the margin with a deflected finish in the 117th minute to take the game into penalty shootouts.
There was nothing to separate the Brazilians and their 2018 runners-up opponents in the first half, with both sides enjoying half chances in a free-flowing game, but nothing clear-cut.
The five-time winners came out after the break playing with the energy that was lacking in the first half, generating several scoring chances, including three from Neymar.
However, they could not find a way past Croatian goalkeeper Dominik Livakovic who made some decisive saves.
Croatia will face either Argentina or the Netherlands, who play later on Friday night, for a place in the final.
