Bangladesh women footballers’ money gets stolen from airport

Shamsunnahar and Krishna both lost $400 each while the latter's Tk50,000 also got stolen

Misfortune struck the triumphant Bangladesh women’s football side as money and other valuables of some team members got stolen from Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport after their return home from Nepal.

The Bengal Tigresses were accorded an open top bus celebration from the airport till the Bangladesh Football Federation House in Motijheel after their maiden title win in the sixth edition of the Saff Championship.

The women booters however, got to learn about the unfortunate incident after setting foot at BFF House.

According to a team source, a bag got stolen from a trolley at the airport and in it contained $800 belonging to Shamsunnahar and Krishna Rani Sarkar while Krishna also lost Tk50,000.

Marzia Akhter’s Nepali rupees also got stolen as the champions girls were visibly upset with the theft incident. 

Bangladesh women’s football team head coach Golam Rabbani Choton told Bangla Tribune, “We got to know about this at night. This is a very sad incident.”

The Hazrat Shahajalal International Airport however, claimed that the money from the luggage of the two players were not stolen at the Dhaka airport. 

Airport Executive Director Kamrul Islam told Dhaka Tribune that the incident did not occur at the Dhaka airport.

Airport authorities also confirmed the matter in a media statement Thursday.
