Fabio Cannavaro returned to coaching Wednesday after Benevento announced that the former World Cup winner had taken charge of the Serie B side.

Cannavaro had been out of work since leaving Chinese Super League side Guangzhou Evergrande in September last year and returns home to replace Fabio Caserta, who was sacked Tuesday.

Benevento, who sit 13th in Italy's second tier after losing three of their opening six matches of the season, did not reveal the details of Cannavaro's contract.

Italian media report that he has signed until June 2024 and will earn 500,000 euros ($495,738) in his first season and one million euros in the second.

Cannavaro has only managed teams in China and Saudi Arabia up to now.

The 49-year old won the Ballon d'Or and Fifa World Player of the Year in 2006 after starring in Italy's triumph at that year's World Cup, the only defender to win both awards.

He also won the 1999 Uefa Cup with a star-studded Parma team, as well as two consecutive Spanish League titles with Real Madrid in the years immediately following Italy's most recent World Cup win.
