Update : 06 Aug 2022, 04:01 AM

Bangladesh lost to India by 5-2 in the final of the Saff U-20 Championship at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar yesterday.

India's Gurkirat Singh emerged as the hero with four goals although Bangladesh fought hard in the match to finish the stipulated 90 minutes on 2-2.

However, the hosts were irresistible during extra time scoring three times to sink their neighbors.

Gurkirat, named the most valuable player of the championship, put India ahead early in the second minute of the match.

Bangladesh tried hard to stage a fightback and finally got the success in the 45th minute when Rajon Hawlader restored parity as he sent the ball home with a fierce shot from goal mouth melee.

After resumption, Shahin Mia again put Bangladesh ahead scoring the second goal in the 48th minute while Gurkirat levelled the score with his second goal at the hour mark.

In extra time, Himanshu Jhangta netted the third goal for the defending champions in the 92nd minute while Gurkirat scored the remaining two goals in the 93rd and 99th minutes to seal India’s comprehensive victory.

Sri Lanka were given the fair play award in the tournament.
