Bangladesh Football Federation believes the recruitment of the young and energetic coach will reinvigorate the national side and will yield better results in future.
BFF Saturday officially announced that 37-year old Spaniard Javier Cabrera has been appointed as national team coach for a year up to December.
“Javier Cabrera has been appointed as our new national team coach for a year, ending in December 2022. We are expecting him to be here by the 15th of this month,” Kazi Nabil Ahmed, national teams committee chairman and vice president of BFF, said during a press briefing at BFF House following their committee meeting.
This will be the first assignment for Cabrera as national team coach and he has not even coached any major club so far.
However, he has a rich academic portfolio as a coach completing some high level degrees and was assistant coach of India’s I-League outfit Goa FC.
Bangladesh's 23rd foreign coach, Cabrera also has experience in grass-root level as he has worked in the capacity of coach and technical director in various academies like LaLiga club Deportivo Alaves, LaLiga School and Virginia section of Barcelona academy.
“He got Uefa pro license. He is 37. He has no family now. So, he will not have much inclination of returning home. He may stay here for full tenure. He will get 10 days of paid leave and will stay with the team for the rest of the year,” added Nabil.
Nabil also informed that they received five to seven CVs but after giving much consideration chose the Spaniard as they believe his knowledge on football, enthusiasm, knowhow of the game in this part of the world and eagerness to work for Bangladesh will help the team.
Nabil added that they are planning to hold two friendly matches on January 24 and 27 and has already discussed over the matter with hosts Indonesia.
