Injury hit Russell aim for revival

Update : 09 Jun 2013, 09:57 PM

An injury to its key players is the major concern for treble winners Sheikh Russell KC ahead of the money spinning Super Cup. Seeking to scoop the fourth available title of the season, a highly confident Russell side began their preparations 15 days back, but with only four days left for the last competition of the season the injuries are proving to be vital for the all-local tournament.

Russell coach Maruful Haque, who believes the absence of the foreign players would make the tournament more competitive, already recruited four locals. Shawkat Khan (Chittagong Abahani), Rimon (Rahmatganj) and Rabby (Victoria) were confirmed from the championship league while Sabuj was signed from recently relegated Arambagh KC.

The number one team of the season Russell will take on Feni Soccer Club in their group ‘A’ match on the opening day at the Bangabandhu National Stadium on June 14. Due to injuries they are likely to miss the service from their star winger Zahid Hossain Chowdhury (ankle), forward Mithun Chowdhury (groin) and midfielder Mamunul Islam (broken elbow). Meanwhile, another key member of the side, national striker Jahid Hassan Emily, who lost his new born child on Thursday, is not yet mentally prepared to join the side.

"We have four top players out injured and doubtful and there is a little chance for them to feature in the first game. But every team has to play three matches in five days and anything can happen. Besides, as there will be no foreign players, every team is a favourite. Players like Uttam Kumar Banik, Anwar and Mithun will get a chance to prove them in the starting eleven," said Maruf yesterday who also hinted to go with 4-2-3-1 or 4-3-3 formation.

However, skipper Biplob is still optimistic of winning the fourth silverware of the season and said they “can make history by winning the Super Cup.”

On the other hand, Feni Soccer Club  manager Sakhawat Hossain Shahin revealed, at a pre match press conference at the BFF House yesterday, they have brought in 15 players for the Super Cup. Rumours suggested that Championship League’s top scorer Jibon from Uttar Baridhara Club is also among the recruits.

Shahin also stated that they started their preparation soon after the BFF president confirmed the tournament. “We have nothing to lose and all to win, we are preparing to show the best in the field” said Shahin

The other two teams in group ‘A’ are Abahani Limited and Muktijoddha KC. Top two finishers from each group will move to the semifinal.
