Uttar Baridhara are on the brink of being promoted to Bangladesh Premier League for the first time in their history after they drew 2-2 against Chittagong Ahabani in their Premier Bank Bangladesh Championship League match yesterday.
However the proceedings raised many eyebrows as many of the spectators termed the match as a fixed one as both the teams are in an advantageous position to get the promotion.
After 11 matches, the Baridhara based club are leading the eight-team league with 22 points while Chittagong Abahani trail them by just a point. With only three matches left, the port city Sky Blues are also likely to return to the top flight after serving two years in the second tier.
A win for Baridhara in their next match against Rahmatganj on Saturday will seal the deal for them with two games in hand. Chittagong Abahani will also get the premier league ticket if they salvage all three points against Agrani Bank on May 3. Third-placed Rahmatganj are four points behind Chittagong Abahani.
It was a thrilling encounter between the top two teams at the Bangabandhu National Stadium yesterday as Abahani scored twice in the dying minutes to snatch a point.
Forward Mohammad Jibon put Baridhara ahead in the 34th minute before Mohammad Dalim doubled the margin four minutes later.
However, the Chittagong side staged a dramatic comeback by leveling the game in the last five minutes. Raju reduced the margin two minutes from the stipulated time before Javed Khan equalised two minutes into the injury time.
