Rohit helps BKSP win football gold

Update : 27 Apr 2013, 05:52 PM

BKSP completed a dream run in the Bangladesh Games football taking the coveted gold medal with a 2-1 win over Barisal in the final at the Bangabandhu National Stadium yesterday.

The lone sports education and training institute qualified for the final round from the services zone and finished their campaign as the champions.

Rohit Sarker, the livewire of BKSP, sent the first chill through the Barisal spine in the 20th minute when he darted down the left flank, and having swerved through the challenge of his marker, unleashed a fierce grounder, which almost went through as it surprisingly whispered past the far post.

Rohit, the wily forward, succeeded to break the deadlock in the 20th minute when his attacking partner Ratul Islam, having won the ball in the left flank, sent a neat cut-back to Rohit, who flicked the ball straight into the far post from the middle of the box.

However, BKSP’s joy lasted for a brief two minutes. Barisal midfielder S.M. Noman restored the parity in the 30th minute with a spectacular effort.  Following a counter-attack, Noman, standing 20 yards out, reacted quickly and let loose a left footed curved shot that beat the outstretched hands of BKSP goalie Mahfuz Hasan.

After the resumption of play following half-time, both teams came close to striking goals but fell short of finishing. However, in the 74th minute, Rohit’s opportunistic strike was enough for the eventual champions to clinch the gold.  Standing unmarked in the middle of the box, Rohit headed the ball home after Barisal goalie Md Titu failed to properly clear a corner.

The remaining minutes told a story of playing purposeful football as BKSP continued to prevail with a dogged defence. They moved down to their defence box and hardly allowed the opponent forwards any free space in their own yard. BKSP almost increased their lead in the 86th minute but substitute midfielder Foysal Hossain’s placing shot, which beat goalkeeper Titu, rolled past the side post.

Finance Minister A M A Muhith distributed the prizes as the chief guest. BOA Secretary General Syed Shahed Reza was present as well.
