Saif Sporting Club became the second team to advance to the Federation Cup semi-finals after beating 10-time winner Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited 7-6 on penalties in the second quarter-final at Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka Saturday evening.

The two teams were locked at 2-2 following the end of normal time, while 30-minute extra time failed to produce a goal as they then turned their attention to the tie-breaker.

Ikechuku Kenneth, Shahedul Alam Shahed, John Okoli and Emmanuel Ariachuku all netted for Saif Sporting in the shootout, while youngster Yeasin Arafat struck the crossbar.

Mohammedan’s Souleymane Diabate, Uryu Nagata, Habibur Rahman Shohag and Mohammad Mithu scored their penalties, while Aminur Rahman Sajib’s unconvincing attempt was saved by Saif Sporting goalkeeper Pappu Hossain.

With the tiebreaker locked at 4-4, the quarter-final then rolled into sudden death.

Mohammedan’s Koulidiati and Amir Hakim Bappy scored their penalties but Atikuzzaman missed his in their third try, while Saif Sporting’s Rahim Uddin, Rahmat Mia and Sirajuddin Ravmatullayev all netted to spark wild celebrations in the dugout.

Saif Sporting will now take on Chittagong Abahani Limited in the last four after the latter defeated Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra 2-0 in the first quarter-final at the same venue Friday.

Earlier, Mohammedan, who won the last of their 10 Fed Cup titles in 2009, broke the deadlock in just the second minute of the game through Atikuzzaman but their joy lasted just five minutes as Saif Sporting brought parity through Emmanuel.

Saif Sporting then took the lead in the 11th minute through Kenneth before Diabate headed home the equalizer on the stroke of half time.
