Withdrawn Badal to feature in ballot paper

The three-member election commission led by its chief, Mejbah Uddin confirmed the fact after finalizing the voters’ list and ballot numbers of the 47 candidates at the BFF House on Sunday

Update : 13 Sep 2020, 09:21 PM

Badal Roy’s name is set to appear in the ballot paper of the next month’s Bangladesh Football Federation Election 2020 as one of three president candidates despite his decision of withdrawal the previous day.

The three-member election commission led by its chief, Mejbah Uddin confirmed the fact after finalizing the voters’ list and ballot numbers of the 47 candidates at the BFF House on Sunday.

The deadline to withdraw the nomination paper was on Saturday 5pm. Mejbah said that Badal himself had called him at 5.10pm for the withdrawal before the latter’s wife, Madhabi Roy, came to BFF with a letter of same purpose around half an hour later.

“We sat in meeting today to discuss the matter. Badal Roy’s name couldn’t be removed from the list of candidates due to the official rules of election stated in article No. 6.11,” chief election commissioner and returning officer Mejbah explained to the reporters.

“Fifa rules, according to articles 6 (C) and 6 (D), are also strict to enforce the directorial code and ensure that the election rules are properly followed. Our stance is that he is a legitimate candidate.” he added.

The reason behind three-time vice-president Badal’s withdrawal was health issues. Mejbah wished him quick recovery. “He is a top-level football organizer. We wish him quick recovery.”

According to the final list of candidates, three former national footballers including the incumbent and three-time president Kazi Salahuddin (Ballot No. 1), Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club head coach Shafiqul Islam Manik (Ballot No. 3) and Badal (Ballot No. 2) will contest for president post. There are two candidates for single senior vice-president post, eight for four vice-president posts and 34 for 15 member posts.

The much-awaited election, originally scheduled for 20 April, will be held at the Pan Pacific Hotel Sonargaon on 3 October.
