Bangladesh Championship League 2019-20, the second-tier league of the country, has been abandoned for the season, declared Bangladesh Football Federation after holding live video conference with the club representatives Wednesday.
A media release from the country’s football governing body confirmed about the abandonment of the league and said it will start the Bangladesh Premier League and BCL from the new 2020-21 season.
“All the participating clubs anonymously agreed to cancel this season,” said BFF general secretary Abu Nayeem Shohag after the professional league committee meeting.
BCL was earlier scheduled to kick off on March 28 but later deferred to June 15 due to Covid-19 outbreak.

A total of 13 teams were among the participants – NoFeL Sporting Club, Agrani Bank Limited SC, T&T Club Motijheel, Victoria SC, Dhaka City Football Club, Fakirerpool Young Men's Club, Shadhinata Krira Sangha, Uttara FC, Kawran Bazar Pragati Sangha, Dhaka Wanderers Club, Wari Club and Fortis Sports Academy.
The abandonment without a game and transfer window means some 400 footballers expected to participate in the second-tier league are jobless for a whole season.
BFF also added in the statement that they are seeking financial support from world football governing body Fifa and Bangladesh government to help the clubs, District Sports Associations, footballers, coaches, officials and referees, among others who are suffering for the absence of all football activities due to Covid-19 pandemic.
