Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club reached the quarter-finals of the Walton Federation Cup 2017 as group champion after beating Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra 4-1 in the tiebreaker in their last group stage match at Bangabandhu National Stadium on Friday.
Both the sides defeated Farashganj Muslim Friends Society with the same margin. And after Friday's game ended goalless following regulation time, penalties were required where Sheikh Jamal proved their authority to emerge as Group B champion.
The Dhanmondi outfit will face Mohammedan Sporting Club Limited in the first quarter-final on Wednesday while Sheikh Russel will be up against rising powerhouse Chittagong Abahani in the second last-eight encounter a day later.
Sheikh Jamal goalkeeper Samiul Islam became the hero of the day in the penalty shootout as he produced two brilliant saves to deny Sheikh Russel’s first spot kick by Nigerian defender Eleta Benjamin Jr and the third one by Khalekuzzaman. Only Arup Baidya managed to score from the spot for Sheikh Russel while Raphael Odoyin, Mohammad Alauddin, Zahed Parvez and Momodou Bah all converted for Sheikh Jamal.
There were Gambian forwards in both the sides' starting XI wearing the same No 10 jersey. Sheikh Russel’s Dawda Ceesay and Sheikh Jamal’s Momodou Bah however, largely failed to entertain the crowd.
Only Sheikh Jamal managed to create a notable attack in the first half when Ceesay broke into the left flank of the penalty area before taking a fierce shot that was blocked by Samiul.
Sheikh Jamal looked dominant in the second half as well. Sohel Mia squandered a big chance in the 56th minute when the young forward failed to utilise a cutback from Gambian striker Momodou.
In the 67th minute, Sohel tried his luck from 25 yards out with a powerful strike that flew over the crossbar. Sohel was immediately substituted by Zahed Parvez.
Sheikh Russel went close to scoring in the 73rd minute but Ceesay’s goal-bound shot was blocked by one of his own teammate, Fazley Rabbi, at the middle of the box.
In the 78th minute, Momodou’s diving header was brilliantly blocked by Sheikh Russel defender Rashedul Alam Moni following a cross from Odoyin from the right flank.RESULTSheikh Jamal 0 (5) (4) 0 Sheikh Russel
