We are taking preparation, so far keeping April 20 as the election date

Update : 21 Mar 2020, 06:52 PM

The three-member election committee on Saturday decided to announce the Bangladesh Football Federation's next election schedule on April 3, if the coronovirus outbreak remains at a tolerance level in the country.

We are taking preparation, so far keeping April 20 as the election date. In principle, we have decided to announce the election schedule on April 3, if the coronovirus situation remains in its favour,' said Mezbah Uddin Ahmed, the chief election commissioner of the commission.

The commission decided this in its first meeting at the BFF House after its formation on February 28.

The two other members of the committee- the former bureaucrat Mahfuzur Rahman Siddque and former deputy attorney general Motahar Hossain Saju- and BFF secretary Abu Nyeem Shohag were also present at the meeting.

Mezbah informed that before the announcement of schedule, the BFF executive committee has to provide the voter list to the commission and it is BFF's responsibility to select a safe election venue in this situation.

He also informed that there were discussions about the current alarming situation, which arose from coronovirus outbreak, and both the commission and BFF are observing the situation for taking further decisions.

'The commission will not interfere over the federation's decision about venue selection. They[BFF executive committee] will decide what to do next. If the coronovirus situation becomes more critical, we will give them further necessary advise,' he said.

Shohag said,' Till now our plan is to hold the election at BFF House. If necessary, we will shift the venue at any suitable place in the city. All the BFF member associations have to provide their councilors name by March 30 and the deadline can be extended, if needs.'

Shohag informed that the BFF is on regular communication with the FIFA and AFC.

However, according to constitution, the councilors name have to approve in associations executive meeting and considering the current situation, Shohag suggested BFF member associations to arrange meeting through teleconference or video conference.

On February 28, the BFF decided to hold its polls on April 20, 10 days before the expiration of the existing executive committee.

The incumbent president Kazi Salahuddin is set to seek his fourth consecutive time in the elections where some 140 councilors  are expected to give their mandates to form a 21-member committee for the next four years.

Badal Roy, an incumbent vice-president of BFF, announced to compete against Salahuddin, following the withdrawal of Saif Sporting Club chairman Tarafder Ruhul Amin.
