Barisal clinched the Bangabandhu U-17 Gold Cup Football Tournament after beating Chittagong 2-1 in the final Saturday at Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka.
The port city outfit took the lead in the 48th minute through Towhidul but Rashedul Islam soon brought parity for Barisal in the 66th minute.
The grand finale of the tournament, organized to mark the birth centenary of the Father of the Nation, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, then entered into extra time after normal time ended 1-1.
Golam Rabbi netted the all-important winner in the 11th minute of extra time as Barisal had the last laugh in the second edition of the age-level competition.
Barisal players celebrate with the champion’s trophy BFF Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was present during the occasion as the chief guest and handed over the prizes.
The champion side got Tk2 lakhs as prize money.
Rabbi finished as the highest goal-scorer with 10 strikes while Chittagong’s Azgar and Barisal’s Saiful Islam were adjudged best goalkeeper and player of the tournament respectively.
Earlier in the semi-finals, Barisal defeated Khulna 2-0 while Chittagong edged Mymensingh 4-3 in the tiebreaker.
