Bangabandhu National U-17 Gold Cup football gets underway

The final as well as knockout phase of the debut edition of Bangamata (girls) U-17 Gold Cup will begin today with the match between Dhaka and Rajshahi at Govt Physical Education College ground

The knockout phase of the Bangabandhu National U-17 (boys) Gold Cup Football Tournament got underway at the Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka Monday, with Chattogram division beating Rangpur 4-3 in a tiebreaker.

The final as well as knockout phase of the debut edition of Bangamata (girls) U-17 Gold Cup will begin today with the match between Dhaka and Rajshahi at Govt Physical Education College ground.

Youth and Sports Minister Zahid Ahsan Russel, who inaugurated the event, said that they will send the top male and female booters from these tournaments for training in South America and Europe, respectively.

“Last year, we sent four [male] footballers to Brazil. This time, we are planning to send a whole team to Brazil or Argentina. We will also send the female players to Europe as well. It could be in Portugal,” the minister said Monday.

Abdur Razzak, coach coordinator of country-wide tournaments, said: “Four to five coaches are working to select 35-40 players each from the boys and girls event for a residential training camp, in order to further nurture them before picking them for the abroad camp.”

There is no fixture of the ongoing Women’s Football League until Friday. Jaber Bin Ansari, the BFF manager of the competitions, said around 30 players from different clubs are participating in the Bangamata U-17 Gold Cup.

Meanwhile, more than 100,000 young booters participated in the opening round held across the country from September, from where eight divisional champions qualified for the final round.
