Sheikh Jamal bow out after Saif loss

Saif Sporting, with four points from two matches, and Rahmatganj, with two points from as many games, have now advanced to the quarter-finals as the group champions and runners-up, respectively

Lt Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club Limited bowed out of the Federation Cup in the group stage, after losing 3-1 to Saif Sporting Club at Bangabandhu National Stadium in Dhaka Friday.

Saif Sporting, with four points from two matches, and Rahmatganj Muslim Friends Society, with two points from as many games, have now advanced to the quarter-finals as the group champions and runners-up, respectively.

Rahmatganj will take on defending champion Abahani Limited in the last eight Monday, while Saif Sporting will face off against Police Football Club a day later.

Sheikh Jamal took the lead in the ninth minute through Omar, but Saif Sporting restored parity in the 14th minute when Yeasin Arafat’s shot from outside the box took a deflection off defender Kesto Kumar before going into the net.

The two sides went into the break with the scores level and Saif Sporting had to wait till the 81st minute to take the lead, when Tajik booter Jahangir Ergasev stroked home from the penalty spot.

Saif Sporting completed their scoring in the third minute of injury time through Kyrgyz player Murolimjon Akhmedov.

Saif Sporting head coach Mohammad Nizam said he was happy after the game and his charges followed his tactics to the tee.

In contrast, Sheikh Jamal head coach Shafiqul Islam Manik cut a furious figure in the post-match press conference, and blamed referring decisions for their loss.
