The first edition of the BFF-Unicef U-16 National Women’s Football Championship is all set to kick off with its first round fixtures at six separate venues across the country Thursday.

A total of 39 district teams will be participating in the knockout-basis preliminary round before six zonal champions and two best runners-up teams compete in a league-basis eight-team final round, scheduled to be held in Dhaka next month.

The six zonal venues - Rangpur, Gopalganj, Rajshahi, Jessore, Khagrachari, Mymensingh – will host a total of 33 matches.

BFF is treating the tournament as a talent-hunt initiative as their coaches will watch all the matches to select the budding talents before grading them in three categories – A, B and C - for a two-month long camp outside Dhaka.

BFF women’s wing committee chairman Mahfuza Akhter Kiron disclosed all these in a press conference at BFF House Wednesday.

Unicef Bangladesh’s Communication, Advocacy and Partnership Section chief, Jean-Jacques Simon and communication officer advocacy and partnership of the same organization, Iftikhar Ahmed Chowdhury also spoke during the occasion.
