Bashundhara Kings continued their supremacy in the ongoing Bangladesh Premier League as they clinched a thumping win of 4-1 against Mohammedan Sporting Club at Bangabandhu Stadium of Dhaka on Sunday.

The league leaders have consolidated their top position with the result as they have now 28 points from 10 matches and are leading by four points from defending champions Abahani Limited who have 24 points from same number of matches.

The match at the capital was the perfect illustration of current state of Dhaka’s football and its paradigm shift as the new comer of the league, the cash-rich side Bashundhara showed total domination against Mohammedan, the falling giant, once the most successful and crowd favourite team.

The dilapidated side has now lost seven of their 10 games so far and is languishing on the 11th position, adjacent to the relegation zone, in the 13-team league. The struggling club got a new coach in the likes of Englishman Sean Lane recently but the changed could make very little impact on their fate.

Bashundhara took 19 minutes to break the deadlock and started the ominous proceedings for the men in black and white. Kings’ Brazilian recruit Marcos Vinicius scored the first goal of the match when he ran past two defenders to meet Mohammad Ibrahim’s cross and send it home with a deft touch.

The tradition outfits however got some sort of luck and an improbable equalizer just two minutes later. King’s goalkeeper Anisur Rahman Zico, who is normally considered a safe house under the bar, made a blunder as he passed a ball to Mohammedan striker Landing Darboe. The experienced Gambian made no mistake to put the ball inside the posts.

But Bashundhara could regain the ascendancy before the first half through two more goals. On 37th minute Ibarahim’s corner was going beyond the playing area but Mohammedan defender Yousuf Sifat’s head brought that in and Motin Mia made it a goal from a goalmouth melee.

Motin could double his tally four minutes later when he took powerful shot after receiving a ball from  Bakhtiyar Duyshobekov but the shot rebounded off the post. However, Vinicius got his second as he utilised his knee for scoring from the rebound.

Duyshobekov put last nail in Mohammedan’s crossing as he chipped on over Mohammedan’s advancing goalkeeper Sarwar Jahan in the 83rd minute to make it 4-1.

In the other match of the day Sheikh Russel and Muktijoddha Sangshad ended with a goalless draw at Sylhet District Stadium. With the result Russel are at third position with 21 points from 10 matches while Muktijoddha are on sixth with 14 points from same number of matches.
