Reigning champion Abahani Limited and newcomer Bashundhara Kings were installed as favourites for the Bangladesh Premier League title prior to the start of the top-flight league but Sheikh Russel Krira Chakra proved Friday they’re also in the mix with a confident 2-0 win over the Sky Blues.
At Sylhet District Stadium, Sheikh Russel were in attacking mode from the onset, and took the lead in the 24th minute.
It was Rafael Odoyin who provided the breakthrough and the Blues doubled their lead five minutes from the final whistle through Brazilian Alex Rafael Antonio.
This was Abahani’s second league defeat this season, and this was their first loss against Sheikh Russel in four years.
Six-time champion Abahani came to Sylhet on the back of a five-match winning streak but Sheikh Russel brought them right back down to earth.
Despite repeated attempts, the Sky Blues were unable to breach the Blues defence and now have 18 points from eight games.
In spite of the defeat, Abahani are still top, while Sheikh Russel are second with 17 points from seven matches.
Bashundhara are third with 16 points.
