Arambagh beat BJMC, reach Independence Cup quarterfinals

Local forward Arifur Rahman sealed the victory moments before the break for the Motijheel-based club.

Local strikers made a great show as reigning champions Arambagh Krira Sangha became the first club to reach the quarterfinals of the Walton Independence Cup after beating Team BJMC 2-1 in their opening encounter at the Bangabandhu National Stadium Tuesday.

The result saw other team from the same group, Saif Sporting Club also make it to the last eight while BJMC became the first club to see the exit door. Saif won the first match of the group against BJMC.

Arambagh captain Rabiul Hasan, one of Bangladesh’s top young performers in the Asian Games and Saff Championship, put the Motijheel outfits ahead early in the game before Nigerian forward Samson Iliasu cancelled out the lead later in the opening half.
