Packed crowd welcomes Tigers

Update : 28 Apr 2015, 07:47 PM

All the attention might be on Dhaka and Chittagong due to the city corporation polls but Khulna wasn’t that far off as the first of two Test matches between Bangladesh and Pakistan got underway yesterday at Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium.

It has been a few days since Khulna turned into a city of festival. Anticipation among the people of Khulna gradually grew on the eve of the first Test but the celebrations and festivities reached their peak when skipper Mushfiqur Rahim won the toss and decided to take first strike. The SANS crowd, packed to the rafters, erupted in absolute joy when Mushfiq chose to bat.

Thousands of people, who did not get the tickets, were still waiting outside the stadium premises and cheered for the Tigers wholeheartedly despite not getting the opportunity to enter the field.

The crowd might have been a bit disappointed as Bangladesh scored at 2.62 runs per over to end the first day’s proceedings on 236/4 but Mominul Haque’s 162-ball 80, Imrul Kayes’ second Test fifty and Mahmudullah’s 49-run knock gave them something to smile about.

Khulna hosted its first Test match since November last year when the Tigers thumped Zimbabwe by a huge margin of 162 runs.
