Almost a week after the “unexpected” embarrassment of Rubel Hossain, the national spearhead finally appeared in public and as “expected”, he was not able to dodge the media who were eager to hear from him.
With the World Cup knocking at the door, the cricketers are fine tuning themselves for the Dhaka Premier League super league which starts in two days’ time and Rubel, who is playing for Legends of Rupganj, spent some time at the gymnasium of the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium yesterday.
Naznin Akter Happy, an actress and model, filed a case against Rubel on December 14 at the Mirpur Model Police Station under the Women and Children Repression Act. Rubel went quiet following the issue but had said of speaking about it in public at the right time.
Although he tried to escape the journalists waiting for him, after several requests the 24-year-old agreed to talk, that too without any questions regarding his “Happy incident.”
“I hope I will be able to get a call in the squad,” said Rubel. “I think I performed fairly in the Zimbabwe series and also in the ongoing Dhaka League.”
“I will try to perform in the best way possible in the Super League (of Dhaka Premier League) so that the selectors can have faith on me. It is every cricketer’s dream to play in the World Cup and I also dream the same,” he said.
Rubel thinks the condition in Australia and New Zealand will give an extra edge to the fast bowlers.
“The pacers take the benefit from the wickets there (Australia-New Zealand). A team at times play three-four pacers so I think our team will also be formed in that way. We (pacers) will have heavy responsibility as the wickets are friendly to us,” said Rubel, who has 69 wickets from 53 one-day internationals.
Rubel also has 32 Test wickets in 22 appearances. In Bangladesh’s last assignment against Zimbabwe, he bagged five wickets in two Tests and four from as many ODIs.
