Roquibul lauds Bangladesh pacers, debutants

Update : 07 Sep 2014, 06:55 PM

Bangladesh skipper Mushfiqur Rahim’s decision to field first in the first Test of the two-match series against the West Indies at St. Vincent might have raised a few eyebrows but former national captain Roquibul Hasan is of the opinion that the visiting bowlers actually did quite well to stem the flow of runs of the home side.

West Indies declared their first innings on 484/7 from 160 overs and despite the pacemen picking up just a wicket among the seven wickets to fall, Roquibul said Al Amin Hossain and Rubel Hossain bowled a good line and length which prevented the hosts from scoring freely.

“The pace bowlers did reasonably well as you know the pitch was on the slower side. Al Amin and Rubel did create some chances which was a good sign,” said Roquibul.

Roquibul also praised debutants Taijul Islam and Shuvagata Hom Chowdhury with the former scalping a five-wicket haul on his Test debut.

“I think the two debutants (Taijul and Shuvagata) bowled well and I am impressed with their approach as both of them gave the loop to the batsman which was needed,” he said.

The former skipper stated for Bangladesh to draw the game, the batsmen would have to play well, especially the top-order.

“A lot of time is left in this match and there is a bright chance for Bangladesh to draw the match but for that to happen, the Bangladesh batsmen have to bat well, mainly the top-order. Only then the visitors can hope for a draw,” he added.
