‘Don’t get jealous of IPL’

Update : 18 Aug 2014, 07:46 PM

There was no doubt that the question would come up sometime. It was a more a matter of ‘when’ rather than ‘if’. Should Mahendra Singh Dhoni resign as captain after India were, yet again, on the receiving end of a hammering overseas? But the India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni shot back when asked about his resignation, saying he was strong enough and that everyone should just ‘wait and watch’ for his decision.

“I was asked the same question in 2011. Wait and watch, I am strong enough. And if I am not, you will get to know. The lowest point was 2011 because we had the resources then and yet we had failed,” said Dhoni.

When asked if the youngsters in the Indian circuit would be better served if they skip the Indian Premier League in order to get some experience in County Cricket, Dhoni said, “Ask the BCCI about it. And don’t get jealous of IPL.”

When asked if he had taken India as far as he could and done enough as the captain, Dhoni curtly replied, Maybe, yes.

He added: “Why we are not lasting more than one session is very difficult to answer now. The batting form kept sliding and we were never really able to accumulate the runs to compete.”

He also said, during the presentation ceremony, that the continuous failure of the batsmen affected the confidence of their top-order as they could not absorb the pressure. He also he blamed lack of experience for India’s meek 1-3 surrender in the series, which concluded with the visitors capitulating in inside 3 days at The Oval.
