The five-member ‘coach search’ committee formed by Bangladesh Cricket Board looks to reqruit a top coach for the Bangladesh national cricket team. BCB’s acceptance of outging coach Shane Jurgensen’s resignation on Monday meant the board would have around two months to fill the vacant position before the home ODI series against India begins.
This gave birth to speculation whether BCB will be able to land a high-profile coach within the short time. However, BCB’s chief of cricket operations and a member of the coach search committee,Akram Khan, is hopeful of finding the successor to Jurgensen.
“We are trying to get a new coach before the India series,” said Akram to the media yesterday. “I don’t want to mention any name at the moment as all the options which we are looking at are engaged,” he added. But the former national skipper didn’t rule out the chances of bringing in a local coach for the team if they fail to find a top coach within the time left before the series against India.
Besides looking for a head coach, the BCB will also look for a specialized batting, a bowling and a fielding coach, informed Akram. It was learnt that BCB is interested in former Indian cricketer Sourav Ganguly as the batting coach or consultant while former Australian spinner Shane Warne is being contacted by the BCB for the position of the spin consultant.
“We are five members in the team. We will do whatever is best for the team. We are looking for both bowling and batting coach. Actually we are looking for a complete package. We will inform the media when we confirm a coach,” said Akram.
Another member of the committee and also the chief of BCB’s game development, Khaled Mahmud Sujon also echoed the same sentiment as Akram. “Our aim is to find a top level coach for the team but we (committee) are yet to hold a meeting. We will soon hold a meeting, shortlist the names and try to sign a coach who meets our criteria,” informed Sujon.
Talking about the criteria, Sujon informed that the board would be looking for a coach who would give enough time to cricket on the field and can get along with the players really quick. Mahbub Anam, Jalal Younus and Naimur Rahman are the other three members of the coach search committee.
