Gazi Tank move to top of table

Title contenders Gazi Tank Cricketers moved a step towards the title of the Dhaka Premier League by defeating Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club yesterday. In the other two games of round three, Prime Doleshwar beat Mohammedan Sporting Club and Kalabagan Cricket Academy secured a win over Prime Bank Cricket Club.

Gazi Tank v Sheikh Jamal

Riding on Raqibul Hasan’s unbeaten 90, Gazi Tank defeated Sheikh Jamal by six wickets at Khan Shaheb Osman Ali Stadium to move to the top of the table with 20 points.

 Batting first, Elton Chigumbura’s unbeaten 109 aided Sheikh Jamal in posting 259/9 in their 50 overs. Zimbabwean cricketer Chigumbura was brilliant in hammering his ton off 94 balls with six fours and nine maximums. The side’s skipper Mushfiqur Rahim added 38 to the tally. Ryan ten Doeschate was Gazi’s most successful bowler with three wickets.

In reply, Gazi Tank reached the target in 46 overs with six wickets in hand. Opening batsman Imrul Kayes got the innings off to a flying start with 81 off 95 balls, before Raqibul’s unbeaten closing effort. Raqibul faced 93 deliveries and struck 10 boundaries and two sixes for his 90. Steven Crook was the most successful of the Sheikh Jamal bowlers, bagging two wickets at the in seven overs.

The defeat saw Sheikh Jamal move drop one place to third in the table.

Prime Doleshwar v Mohammedan

At Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium, Prime Doleshwar defeated Mohammedan by seven wickets and kept their title hopes alive.

 Batting first, the Mohammedan innings crumbled as the side were bowled out for 143 in 42.3 overs. Middle order batsman Muktar Ali top scored with 46, followed by Upal Tharanga’s 24.

Sabbir Rahman led the Prime Doleshwar bowlers with 4/39, while the side’s skipper Farhad Reza took 3/9.

Later, Prime Doleshwar reached the target in 23 overs while losing three wickets. Opening batsman Mehedi Maruf hammered 40, Rony Talukder scored 37 and Mominul Haque was unbeaten on 33 at the end. The win was Doleshwar’s ninth in 13 games and the fifth defeat for Mohammedan.

Kalabagan CA v Prime Bank CC

Kalabagan Cricket Academy defeated Prime Bank by seven runs in a nail biting game at BKSP Ground 2. The defeat spoiled Ravi Bopara’s century for Prime Bank.

Losing the toss, Kalabagan were sent in to bat and rode on Hamilton Masakadza’s 125 off 101 balls (15 fours, five sixes) to post a total of 305/7 in their 50 overs. Abdul Mazid scored 54 and Avishek Mitra added 44, while Rezaul Karim topped the Prime Bank bowling with 5/54.

 In reply, Prime Bank were bowled out 49.5 overs for 298. Shehan Jayasuriya got Prime Bank off to a blazing start with 37 off 17 balls. Prime Bank skipper Ravi Bopara capitalized on the start and struck a fine 138 along with Taiabur Parvez’s 76 to put Prime Bank on course for a win. However, Parvez’s dismissal initiated a collapse and though Bopara remained until the last over, it was not enough.

Nazmul Apu had the best figures for Kalabagan with 5/59.
