India produced a commanding all-round performance to defeat New Zealand by 96 runs and lift their third ICC Men’s T20 World Cup title at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday.

Roared on by a packed crowd of more than 100,000 fans, the hosts piled up a daunting 255-5 before bowling New Zealand out for 159 in 19 overs to successfully defend their crown and become the first team to win the tournament three times.

India’s explosive batting display was led by Sanju Samson, who smashed 89 off 46 balls with eight sixes and five fours. He received strong support from Abhishek Sharma, who struck a blistering 52 from just 21 deliveries, and Ishan Kishan, who hammered 54 off 25 balls.

The trio powered India to a remarkable 203-1 after 15 overs, putting the final firmly in the hosts’ control. New Zealand briefly fought back when James Neesham claimed three wickets in the 16th over, removing Samson, Kishan and captain Suryakumar Yadav in quick succession.

However, a late cameo from Shivam Dube (26 not out off eight) ensured India finished with a massive total.

Chasing 256, New Zealand never fully recovered from early blows. Tim Seifert provided a brief spark with a 26-ball 52, but wickets fell regularly around him.

India’s bowlers quickly tightened their grip on the match, with Jasprit Bumrah delivering a brilliant spell of 4-15 to dismantle the middle and lower order. Axar Patel also played a key role with 3-27, while Hardik Pandya and Varun Chakravarthy chipped in with a wicket each.

New Zealand were eventually bowled out for 159, falling well short of the towering target.

The victory marked a historic milestone for India as they not only defended their title but also became the first nation to win the T20 World Cup three times, capping a dominant era in the shortest format.

For New Zealand, it was another painful defeat in a major white-ball final despite a spirited effort.
