Former Bangladesh captain and current Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Aminul Islam Bulbul has confirmed that he will contest in the upcoming BCB elections scheduled for the first week of October.
Although he had earlier indicated he would not take part, Aminul has now publicly declared his candidacy for a director’s post in the election. His decision has quickly become a talking point in cricketing circles, with growing debates over leadership and council nominations as the polls near.
For the past three months, Aminul has been serving as acting BCB president under the nomination of the National Sports Council (NSC). He explained that his shift to administration is driven by a desire to contribute more directly to the growth of Bangladesh cricket.
“I want to do more for Bangladesh cricket whenever the country needs me,” Aminul told reporters during a visit to the Sylhet District Stadium, where he also inspected facilities. “The election will be held in the first week of October, Insha’Allah. Our board does not elect a president directly, it is the directors who contest. I’ll try my best to be there and continue serving cricket and the nation.”
Aminul, who etched his name in history with Bangladesh’s first Test century, said his return from a permanent role at the ICC was motivated by national service. “I left behind my permanent role at the ICC to return and serve my country. As long as I can, I want to keep working for the betterment of Bangladesh cricket.”
His announcement has been met with keen interest within the cricket fraternity, with many viewing his entry into the election race as a significant step for the game’s administration in Bangladesh.
The previous BCB polls took place on October 6, 2021, with the inaugural board meeting held the following day. Following that cycle, the present committee is required to conclude the next election by October 7, 2025.
