Faruk won’t be available to media like Nazmul

Nazmul had a reputation of speaking to the media on any and every matter, irrespective of the location which often used to be garage at his home or in front of mosque after Friday afternoon prayers

Newly appointed Bangladesh Cricket Board president Faruk Ahmed said he will not be frequently available to the media.

This has come as a mock to his predecessor, former BCB president Nazmul Hasan.

Former cricketer turned chief of the national selection panel, Faruk took charge as the BCB chief Wednesday replacing Awami League leader Nazmul.

Nazmul had a reputation of speaking to the media on any and every matter, irrespective of the location which often used to be garage at his home or in front of mosque after Friday afternoon prayers.

This had become irksome to many in the cricket community and also a good part of the media.

“I won’t be talking to the media much but then I hope you all won’t get upset. It is not that I do not like you guys [the reporters] but as a president I shouldn’t be talking on everything rather the concerned persons or departments should speak,” said Faruk during interaction with the media at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium Wednesday.

Faruk during the one-hour long press conference was vocal on zero tolerance to corruption and that a lot needs to be done to clean up the corroded system.

“We all know the level of corruption that has been found in every sector of the country. Cricket board is not out of it. We will look into it [corruption] if there is any. It will not be possible to totally eliminate corruption, I will not believe if someone says that. But we will have to start a system where we can minimize the issue,” said Faruk.

“I am not sure how long we [the current board] will stay. But I can assure you that during my tenure as the president, I will try to work on these matters,” the new BCB supremo added.

Faruk took charge of the board in an emergency BCB meeting held at the Ministry of Youth and Sports in Dhaka Wednesday.

Following approval of Nazmul’s resignation as BCB chief, Faruk got nominated as a BCB director by the National Sports Council in place of another BCB director Jalal Younus and was then elected as the president.

Nazmul’s resignation marked the end of his 12-year leadership of Bangladesh cricket.

He first became BCB president in 2012 when the government appointed him.

In October 2013, he was elected as president.

Since then, the former Member of Parliament from the Awami League had served three terms as the head of the country's cricket governing body.

Following the fall of Sheikh Hasina and her government earlier this month, changes are sweeping across the country, including at the BCB.
