BCB boss Nazmul agrees to step down

Prior to his decision, he was serving a 4th term as chief of the country’s cricket governing body

Update : 15 Aug 2024, 11:51 PM

Bangladesh Cricket Board supremo Nazmul Hasan has agreed to step down from his position as board president and is keen to ensure a smooth transition of power.

A BCB director requesting anonymity confirmed the information, saying: “Nazmul Hasan has agreed to step down from presidency and informed it to one of our board directors Thursday morning. He has also agreed on the reformation of the board.”

Prior to his decision, he was serving a fourth term as chief of the country’s cricket governing body.

Nazmul took charge of the BCB for the first time in 2012 after getting nominated by the government.

In the 2013 election, he got elected as a board director without contest and was then selected as the president by the board.

The scenario was similar in the 2017 election.

And in 2021, Nazmul contested against 15 councilors in club category and won with flying colors.

BCB had been in jeopardy ever since the unrest in the country triggered by the student protest against the recently dissolved Sheikh Hasina government.

Nazmul had been in hiding with his wife in London since August 5 along with a few other influential board directors who are believed to have the backing of the former prime minister and Awami League president Sheikh Hasina.

In their absence, BCB CEO Nizamudin Chowdhury and seven board directors - Akram Khan, Jalal Younus, Mahbub Anam, Khaled Mahmud Sujon, Ahmed Sajjadul Alam Bobby, Kazi Inam Ahmed and Iftekhar Rahman - went to meet with the newly appointed adviser of the interim government for the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan last Sunday.

They discussed several issues including how to keep the upcoming Women’s Twenty20 World Cup in Bangladesh as uncertainty looms on the fate of the global tournament’s hosts after the recent political turmoil in the country.
