Bangladesh have the upper hand ahead of their last game of Group D in the ongoing Twenty20 World Cup as the opponent Nepal are already out of the tournament.
There was a heartbreak for Nepal last Friday night as they lost to South Africa by the shortest margin of one run which resulted in their elimination and made the path relatively easier for Bangladesh for Super Eight qualification.
The Proteas have already qualified from Group D with four wins and Sri Lanka already eliminated.
With Nepal’s elimination Friday, there are now two teams - Bangladesh and the Netherlands – who are in contention for the qualification of Super Eight in which Bangladesh have the clear edge.
Bangladesh have four points from three matches with wins over Sri Lanka and the Netherlands and boast a healthy net run rate at this point.
The Dutch, who have two points from three games, will play against the Lankans in their last match of Group D today and it will be a night game like Bangladesh-Nepal.
Here are the qualification scenarios for Bangladesh ahead of their last Group D clash against Nepal.
If Bangladesh win they will go through
If Bangladesh won against Nepal then there will be no need of calculation as they will earn six points from four matches and sail through to Super Eight.
If Bangladesh lose to Nepal and Netherlands come up short against Sri Lanka
If Bangladesh and the Netherlands both lose to their respective opponents then Bangladesh will go through as they will have four points compared to the Netherlands’ two after all of their group stage games.
If Bangladesh lose to Nepal and Netherlands win against Sri Lanka
If Bangladesh lose to Nepal and the Netherlands win against Sri Lanka then both teams will have four points and the calculation of NRR will be measured.
Bangladesh currently have a NRR of 0.478 and the Netherlands -0.408 before their respective last matches.
For the Netherlands to qualify, the combined margins of those results will have to be at least 53 runs, if the teams batting first score 140.
That means, if Bangladesh lose to Nepal by 38 runs - that's the first game of the night – the Netherlands will have to beat Sri Lanka by at least 15 runs.
A smaller margin in either game will allow Bangladesh to qualify.
