Dominant Fortune Barishal knocked Chattogram Challengers out in the eliminator of the Bangladesh Premier League, clinching a commanding seven-wicket win in Mirpur’s Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium Monday.

Chasing a moderate target of 136, Barishal cruised home within 15 overs.

Chattogram made an early breakthrough as their captain Shuvagata Hom took the wicket of Barishal opener Soumya Sarkar (nought) in the second ball of the innings.

In the second over, Chattogram pacer Al-Amin Hossain created another chance as Barishal captain Tamim Iqbal went for a flash outside off stump and the ball went flying towards third man where Saykat Ali missed the catch while running towards his left.

Back to back wickets in the first two overs could have given the Challengers the edge while defending a small total, but they missed their opportunity and were eventually unable to produce another chance to come back in the game.

Tamim then formed an entertaining partnership with No 3 batter Kyle Mayers as these two left-handers added 98 for the second wicket in just 54 balls to finish off Chattogram’s hopes.

Mayers was the more aggressive of the two as the West Indies all-rounder scored 50 off 26 deliveries with three fours and five sixes before getting out in the 10th over.

Although Barishal lost the wicket of South African recruit David Miller (17), Tamim (52* off 43) stood tall and picked up his third 50-plus score in the ongoing tournament.

Earlier, Chattogram lost regular wickets from the beginning after being asked to bat first.

Josh Brown clubbed 34 off 22 at the top but no other batter managed to score big in order to post a challenging total against controlled bowling from Barishal.

They managed to score just 135 runs losing nine wickets, which was not up to the mark on a good batting surface.

Mayers, Saifuddin and Obed McCoy took two wickets each for Barisal.

Mayers was adjudged player of the match for his all-round performance.

Chattogram Challengers 135/9 (Brown 34, Saifuddin 2/28) lost to Fortune Barishal 136/3 in 14.5 overs (Tamim 52*, Mayers 50) by 7 wickets
