Shoriful Islam’s hat-trick and Mohammad Naim’s commanding half-century guided Durdanto Dhaka to a brilliant start to their campaign as they defeated defending champions Comilla Victorians by five wickets in the opening match of the 10th edition of the Bangladesh Premier League in Mirpur’s Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium Friday.

Dhaka skipper Mosaddek Hossain won the toss and elected to field in the tournament opener.

After a somewhat steady start, Comilla lost Liton Das (13 off 16) in the last ball of the fourth over but the other opener Imrul Kayes and new recruit Towhid Hridoy put on a 107-run partnership for the second wicket to set up a good platform for a big total.

But both Imrul and Towhid departed in the 19th over trying to accelerate the innings and Comilla were unable to capitalize on the opportunity to take the score past the 160-mark.

The veteran Imrul scored 66 off 56 balls with six fours and two sixes while Towhid made 47 off 41 with one four and two sixes.

Shoriful came on to bowl the last over of the innings and despite conceding back-to-back sixes off the second and third ball against Khushdil Shah, the left-arm pacer took three wickets in a row off the last three deliveries to claim a hat-trick and help restrict Comilla to 143.

Shoriful dismissed Khushdil, Roston Chase and Mahidul Islam to become the seventh bowler in BPL history to bag a hat-trick.

He finished with figure of 4-0-27-3.

In pursuit of 144, Dhaka started superbly riding on the aggressive Naim as the left-hander scored quick runs all around the park.

Naim made 52 off 40 balls with three fours and as many sixes while other opener Danushka Gunathilaka clubbed 41 off 42.

These two formed a 101-run opening stand as the capital city outfit were cruising.

But Comilla bowlers struck back with wickets and controlled bowling as the match went to the last over.

Four runs were needed from the final over by Mustafizur Rahman and a wicket off the second delivery made the match almost even.

But Dhaka’s new batsman Chaturanga De Silva smashed a maximum off the third ball to seal the game as record four-time winners Comilla made a losing start.

Comilla Victorians 143/6 (Kayes 66, Shoriful 3/27) lost to Durdanto Dhaka 147/5 in 19.3 overs (Naim 52, Gunathilaka 41) by 5 wickets
