Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hasan hoped that opening batsman Tamim Iqbal would change his stance on retirement and keeping that in mind, the board has decided not to name a new captain for the time being.
The BCB boss said this to the media in the early hours of Friday after the board meeting at a hotel in the capital.
Earlier Thursday afternoon, Tamim announced his shock retirement from international cricket, in the process also bringing an end his tenure as the Tigers' One Day International captain.
“Tamim is still the ODI captain. For any reason if the skipper does not play then the vice captain (Liton Das) would take charge of the team. That is what will happen. For now we are not naming any permanent captain,” said Nazmul.
The BCB chief also said he has been unable to get through to Tamim since Thursday, for which he sent a message to the Bangladesh opener through his elder brother Nafees Iqbal.
However, Nazmul is yet to hear back from Tamim.
If the situation remains the same, Liton will lead the side in the remaining two ODIs against Afghanistan.
