Star Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib al Hasan hopes the New Year will bring better days for Bangladesh cricket, particularly for the national team.
The year 2021 has not been not been kind to Bangladesh cricket team.
Alongside losing matches in hectically scheduled bilateral series, the team severely failed in the only major event of the year – the T20 World Cup in Oman and the UAE in October-November.
Former Bangladesh captain Shakib remained unavailable in most of the matches for Bangladesh this year due to various reasons – injury, leave and choosing to play Indian Premier League T20 over national duty.
“This year was disappointing. We had a big event [T20 World Cup]. We had a big target, which we failed to fulfill. So I am personally disappointed in that part,” said Shakib to the media at the Dhaka airport before leaving for the USA Wednesday.
“Such situation is not the first for us and we have been able to bounce back strong in the past. I hope we will be able to bounce back strong in the new year and improve ourselves as a team,” he added.
Shakib emphasized on the need to find the areas which need to be worked on.
“We need improvement in many areas let it be in the field or off the field. We should focus on those areas as a team. It should be a joint effort,” he said.
Bangladesh will begin the new year taking on hosts New Zealand in the first of the two-match Test series on January 1.
Shakib is not part of the team having been granted leave by the Bangladesh Cricket Board.
Bangladesh are bracing for a heavy schedule next year.
The New Zealand series is followed by the eighth edition of the Bangladesh Premier League T20 and home series against Afghanistan.
The team will then travel to South Africa before touring the West Indies in June-July.
In August Bangladesh will take on Zimbabwe at home which will be followed by the Asia Cup, T20 World Cup and tour of Ireland.
By the end of year 2022, Bangladesh are scheduled to host India.
When queried if he will be available for all Bangladesh matches, Shakib said, “Is there any reason not to be?”
If everything is on course, Shakib is set to return to action through the BPL, scheduled to begin on January 21.
The all-rounder is set to take the field for Barisal team.
