Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib al Hasan is set to miss the first Test of the two-match series against Pakistan.
The left-arm all-rounder was included in the squad for the first game subject to been declared fit to play.
The chance of Shakib taking the field however, has been ruled out as he is yet to recover from hamstring injury incurred during the T20 World Cup earlier this month.
Shakib sat out the last two Super 12 matches of Bangladesh in the T20 World Cup after sustaining a left lower hamstring strain while fielding during the West Indies game.
In clinical examination it was diagnosed as an injury of Grade 1 intensity.
Chief of the national selection panel Minhajul Abedin informed that they knew Shakib will not be available for the first Test against Pakistan but kept the option open naming the cricketer part of the squad.
“Shakib is yet to recover from the hamstring injury. We anticipated he will not be fit for the first Test and it is tough to say if he will be available for the second Test. We will receive the physio's report at night [Wednesday] and plan accordingly,” informed Minhajul to the media Wednesday.
“We are not thinking of bringing in a replacement at the moment. We knew chance for Shakib to play was slim for which we had declared a 16-member squad. We will have further discussion on this once we [the selection panel] are in Chittagong,” he added.
Bangladesh dressing room has been dealing with multiple injury concerns.
Alongside Shakib, the side are missing prominent opener Tamim Iqbal, who alongside the Pakistan Tests will also miss the two upcoming New Zealand Tests.
Right-arm fast bowler Taskin Ahmed is also not available for the first Test due to the hand injury incurred during the third T20I against Pakistan earlier this week in Dhaka.
Another pacer Shariful Islam is also unavailable for the Chittagong Test owing to back injury picked up during the second T20I.
Hosts Bangladesh will lock horns with Pakistan in the first Test starting Friday in Chittagong's Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium.
The two-match series is part of the new World Test Championship cycle.
Both Bangladesh and Pakistan Test squad reached the port city Tuesday and had their first round of training sessions at ZACS Wednesday.
