Sharmin's unbeaten ton inspires Bangladesh women to 270-run win

Update : 28 Dec 2021, 05:17 PM

Opener Sharmin Akhter’s unbeaten century and a half century from Fargana Hoque inspired Bangladesh women’s cricket team to their second consecutive win in the ICC Women's Cricket World Cup Qualifier.

Bangladesh Tuesday registered a massive 270-run victory over USA in Group B of the competition in Harare.

With two wins in as many games, Bangladesh are now at the top of Group B.

The side had earlier picked up a memorable win against a strong Pakistan women’s cricket team in their opening game of the tournament.

Bangladesh were asked to bat first after USA won the toss.

Bangladesh however, did not mind as the openers got the side off to a smooth start with a 96-run stand inside 17 overs before Murshida Khatun perished scoring a 56-ball 47.

The other opener Sharmin led from the front with her 130 not out.

The 141-ball innings involved 11 boundaries and two more partnerships to boost the total to 322 runs for the loss of five wickets after 50 overs.

Sharmin’s century though could not be registered as ODI century given that the game is of List A status.

According to the International Cricket Council regulations, 50-over matches between a team with ODI status and a team without the status is to be considered as a List A game.

Sharmin for the second wicket partnered with Nigar Sultana for 48 runs and then found Fargana for the third-wicket partnership and added 137 runs.

Right-arm pacer Geetika Kodali removed Fargana in the 45th over for 67 off 62 laced with six boundaries, while Nigar scored 33 off 26.

Right-arm medium pacer Moksha Chowdhury bagged two wickets for USA.

The massive target had already put ICC associate USA batting unit on the backfoot and Bangladesh bowlers made proper use of the situation.

A combined effort from Bangladeshi bowling attack restricted USA to 52 in 30.3 overs.

Veteran off-spinner Salma Khatun and leg-spinners Fahima Khatun and Rumana Ahmed took two wickets apiece.

Bangladesh in their third group game will face Thailand women’s team at the same venue Thursday.
