Hosts Bangladesh desperate to revive in the dead rubber

Update : 27 Dec 2021, 07:35 PM

Bangladesh will look to avoid a series whitewash and their straight eighth defeat in the format when they face visitors Pakistan in the third and the final T20I of the series at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium on Monday.

Bangladesh have already lost the series with defeats in the first two games coming at the back of the below par batting performance – an issue the team has been a major problem for a good long time now. The reason has made the team suffer in the recently concluded ICC T20 World Cup, where Bangladesh suffered defeats in all the five matches in the Super 12 stage, and it continues at home.

The Bangladesh cricket selectors have now included uncapped opener Parvez Hossain Emon in the squad for the last game in place of Saif Hasan. It is understood that the selectors rather thought Saif, who in the first two games against Pakistan scored only one and a duck, to travel to Chattogram and practice for the upcoming Test series against the same opponents. Saif is in the probable list as opener for the Test series in the absence of Tamim Iqbal who is out with a thumb injury.

Bangladesh have also added pacer Kamrul Islam Rabbi to the squad in place of left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman who is unlikely to play the last T20 due to side pain. There is also injury concern with young pacer Shoriful Islam who is suffering from a groin injury.

Bangladesh have Yasir Ali, Akbar Ali, Nasum Ahmed, Shahidul Islam and Shamim Hossain on the bench and might look to give them some exposure in what effectively is a dead rubber.

Bangladesh bowlers have been doing well, both at home and away, but it is their batting which is letting the force down. The time is frustrating for captain Mahmmadullah who is under pressure for not only the performance of the team but for also that he has to take more responsibility with the bat and ball.

Bangladesh batted first in the first two games but failed to put up competitive totals with failures from the top order. Left-handed batsman Najmul Hossain showed some respite to the issue in the second game scoring 40 off 34 in the last game batting at number three. The effort however could take the total to just 108 runs, Bangladesh’s 12th lowest score in the format.

The surfaces in Mirpur continues to be a nightmare for batters with the ball not coming onto the bat well. The wicket for the second T20I was a fresh surface and was better for batting than the series opener but still, the batsmen were tested to hit through the line.

On the other hand, Pakistan now have won 12 of the 14 matches played against Bangladesh in the format. The side as expected has been on the dominating end carrying its superlative displayed in the T20 World Cup.

Both their batting and bowling has been on point and the team which is a well-settled unit will be high on confidence as they eye a series clean sweep. Their bowlers have been brilliant so far in the series and with aid from the surface have restricted the hosts to totals that are being chased down easily by their well equipped batters.
