The time has come. Chris Gayle and Dwayne Bravo have played their last game in a T20 world Cup. Bravo has announced his retirement and said the game against Australia was his last in West Indies color. Gayle, however, has not retired from the international scene completely, as he wants to retire from international cricket in front of his home crowd in Jamaica.
"It's been a phenomenal career. I didn't announce any retirement but (if) they actually give me one game in Jamaica to go in front of my home crowd, then I can say 'hey guys, thank you so much,” Gayle said in a facebook Live chat with ICC after West Indies' final match of the T20 World Cup.
Bravo thanked God for whatever he has achieved in cricket.
"Thanks, almighty God for the talent he blessed me with and also to represent the West Indies for 18 years. For me, cricket has always been my childhood dream and I wanted to represent the region, follow in the footsteps of my childhood hero Brian Lara. It's good I was able to have a successful career. I am happy to leave the game at this period, I have no regrets," Bravo told.
It was not only the end of two true legends and multiple world cup winners in T20 but also the end of an era. Gayle and Bravo were the biggest advertisements in the shortest format and took the game to a different height since its inception.
These two legends represent T20 cricket like born entertainers. They are the face of this format as they have played T20 cricket all parts of the world, with right approach, with right mindset and earned numbers of trophy in their illustrious careers.
The most important part of their play was ‘entertaining fans’ and that is the core part of T20 cricket, entertain crowds with the skill and battle of bat and ball. Gayle and Bravo, both the legends have entertained the whole world fullest with their Calypso playing style. They have broken so many records and thus fixed their name in the history of the game.
Their statistics in T20Is and T20s are staggering, phenomenon and looks like unreal.
West Indies skipper Kieron Pollard paid a rich tribute to Bravo and said,
“Self-proclaimed, sir champion Bravo. Your service to West Indies cricket has been immense and I really appreciate each and every time you step on the field and represent our people, yourself and us. We've learnt a lot and we continue to learn a lot. This is just another opportunity in another chapter of your life. Thank you, thank you and thank you".
And about Chris Gayle, Shahid Afridi, the former Pakistan player known for his big hitting, has given an ultimate tribute:
“One of the greatest T20I players of all time! Congratulations on a wonderful career Chris Gayle. You inspired a new generation of players all around the world, go well Universe Boss”.
The game has changed a lot and this is the 7th World Cup on going in T20 format, but T20Is will always miss champions like Chris Gayle and Dwayne Bravo in a World Cup stage. Both Gayle and Bravo are two time World Cup champions in this format. They are gone from the World Cup event history now but their legacy will remain forever. Adios Champions!
