Bangladesh hope to finish dismal T20 WC with a win

Update : 23 Dec 2021, 11:24 AM

Bangladesh will hope to end their unsuccessful T20 World Cup campaign on a winning note when they take on Australia in their last game of the event at Dubai International Cricket Stadium Thursday.

Bangladesh will be eager for a victory to reconcile some of their dreadful failures and at the same time, put a dent in Australia's hopes of a semi-final place.

Australia, currently placed at number three in the group with two wins in three games, need to win both their remaining games to stay in the race for the semis and then count on England to beat South Africa.

Interestingly, recent stats between Bangladesh and Australia go in favor of the former.

Bangladesh have come into the T20 World Cup defeating the Aussies 4-1 in the T20 series.

However, the win came in favorable home conditions for the Tigers.

The slow, low and turning tracks at Mirpur in the series against Australia and then against New Zealand are believed to have injected a fake confidence in the Bangladesh spinners.

The batters on the other hand were at their lowest depths in terms of preparation and confidence; the conditions simply were not in favor of them.

In the Middle East, the scenario has been drastically different and Bangladesh have suffered.

They had a tough time in Oman in the qualifiers and playing in the Super 12s in the UAE, they were simply lost, suffering four defeats in as many games.

Bangladesh’s misery in the Super 12s started after they failed to defend 171 against Sri Lanka due to dropped catches and then lost their nerve against the West Indies chasing.

And in their previous game, against South Africa Tuesday, Bangladesh had hit the lowest point in the journey after they were all out for just 84, their sixth lowest total in the format.

The team is in great need of regrouping its batting unit that has remained a chief concern throughout the tournament.

The batters have to identify their role as they all look lost, tending to prefer the same old backs to the wall approach when in the middle and cornered.

Against South Africa, Bangladesh innings recorded four ducks involving key batters in Soumya Sarkar, Mushfiqur Rahim and Afif Hossain, while only three batters could score in double digit.

Facing an early debacle, Bangladesh found Mahedi Hasan at No 8 to put up some resistance against the Proteas and score 27 runs, the highest in the innings.

Bangladesh will carry the blow of missing star all-rounder Shakib al Hasan to injury in this game too.

Left-arm pacer Mustafizur Rahman was benched against South Africa and is likely to come back to action in place of left-arm spinner Nasum Ahmed.

Wicketkeeper-batsman Nurul Hasan is yet to recover from injury and is well out from this game as well.

Australia on the other hand will hope to take advantage of Bangladesh's problems against pace bowling on a Dubai wicket that saw Sri Lanka post 154, the highest total batting first.

Australia are going into the game on the back of a heavy defeat, by eight wickets, to tournament favorites England.

Australia did not play Mitchell Marsh in the England game, in Dubai, but the all-rounder is likely to return to the XI against Bangladesh replacing Ashton Agar.

There are no apparent injury concerns in the Aussie camp.

Bangladesh XI [probable]:

Mohammad Naim, Liton Das (WK), Soumya Sarkar, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah (C), Afif Hossain, Shamim Hossain, Mahedi Hasan, Taskin Ahmed, Mustafizur Rahman, Shariful Islam
