Shakib ruled out for remainder of the group stage matches

Update : 22 Dec 2021, 04:48 PM

Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib al Hasan is ruled out from the two remaining group matches of Bangladesh in the ongoing T20 World Cup due to injury. An official media release of the Bangladesh Cricket Board on Sunday confirmed the matter.

The Bangladesh team will not take a replacement for Shakib for the remainder of the competition, the press release also informed.

Bangladesh have lost all three games so far in the group stage and even the wins in next two games will not guarantee them a place in the semifinal. As a result, Shakib’s World Cup mission is all but over.

Left-arm all-rounder Shakib in the previous game, against West Indies on Friday at Sharjah Cricket Stadium, was seen struggling with a hamstring injury. Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) chief physician Dr Debashish Chowdhury speaking to Dhaka Tribune on Saturday had informed Shakib has been put under observation for a couple of days.

Within a matter of a night however, a decision has come of ruling Shakib out for the remaining group matches of the tournament. Bangladesh’s in their last two Group 1 matches in Super 12s phase of the tournament, is set to play against South Africa on Tuesday at Abu Dhabi before facing against Australia on November 4 in Dubai.

“Shakib sustained a left lower hamstring strain while fielding during the match against the West Indies. In clinical examination it was diagnosed as an injury of Grade 1 intensity. He is ruled out from participation in the last two matches of the tournament and until further review,” said Dr Debashish in the BCB statement.

Shakib in six appearances for Bangladesh in the T20 World Cup has scored 131 runs and picked 11 wickets. Shakib missing from the games will come as a headache to the selection panel that now has to decide whether to bring in an extra batsman or a spinner in the playing XI.

As per the tournament regulation a team has to have a 15-member squad. Bangladesh team however is not carrying extra players in UAE and is understood to have decided to not bring in players from home due to time constraint. A new member, if flown from Dhaka, will have to undergo Covid-19 protocols which involve quarantine before being allowed into the team bio-bubble.

The situation now has once again raised question on the planning of the team management that went behind in preparing the squad for the mega event.

Bangladesh had reached Oman last month with 17 cricketers and going into the tournament it had a 15-member squad and carried pacer Rubel Hossain as a reserve player.

Bangladesh so far in the tournament has faced three injuries, Mohammad Saifuddin, Nurul Hasan and Shakib. Rubel came into the squad last week in place of Saifuddin who was sent home due to back injury.

The team then faced injuries of Nurul and Shakib – but there isn’t any player as backup to the duo – where as other teams participating in the tournament have carried at least two to three cricketers to deal such situations.

Nurul had picked an injury on his right testis while batting at the nets facing right-arm Taskin Ahmed, the night before the game against England on October 26. Despite the discomfort Nurul was available for the game against England but was rested against West Indies after reports showed he has fractured his right testis. Nurul is still under observation.

As a result, Bangladesh may even struggle to field a full-fit 11 in the next two matches. During the covid-era, when picking players from outside bio-bubble is very difficult, the question that will rise along with the poor performance of the Tigers is the failure of management taking cautions and preparations for emergency.
