Bangladesh’s three consecutive defeats in the Super 12 stage means the Tigers are all but out of semi-final contention in the ongoing T20 World Cup. A miracle might take Bangladesh to the last four but there are many calculations for that to happen. Bangladesh must need to win their remaining two matches against South Africa and Australia by big margin to have any hope. It was a big chance to win against the West Indies but the Tigers somehow fluffed the opportunity. Among many things here are a few talking points from Bangladesh’s loss against the Windies.
This time Afif dropped catch costs Tigers heavily
Catching has become a major concern for Bangladesh in this tournament as the Tigers lost their Super 12 opener against Sri Lanka where Liton Das dropped two vital catches which cost the game. Almost similar thing happened against the West Indies as Afif Hossain, one of the best fielders of Bangladesh, dropped a sitter in the deep cover region. Jason Holder was batting on one when the catch went up in the air and Afif grassed a simple and easy one. Holder went on to blast 15 off just five balls in the last part of the innings, which gave the Windies the momentum. And Bangladesh lost the game eventually by just three runs.
Mustafizur concedes three sixes in last over
Mustafizur Rahman’s good form prior to the T20 World Cup was a good sign for Bangladesh as the left-arm pacer bowled well in the Australia and New Zealand series. But Mustafizur has not performed to his standards in this tournament as he took eight wickets in six games but most notably at an economy rate of 8.63. Mustafizur gave away three sixes in the last over against the Windies, which turned out to be the deciding factor of the game. Holder smashed two sixes against him, among which the first was from a leg stump full toss. In the last ball, Kieron Pollard also hammered a six; Mustafizur conceding 19 runs in that over, unbecoming for a class bowler like him in the death overs.
Audacious Mushfiq shot, yet again
Mushfiqur Rahim departed in a very crucial phase of the game when Bangladesh needed 53 off 40 deliveries with seven wickets in hand. The eye-catching part of his dismissal was the way he got out, trying to scoop a slower delivery. Mushfiq is considered as one of the most experienced and technical Bangladesh batsmen who has all sorts of shots in his book. But in the last few matches Mushfiq was dismissed several times while trying to play a scoop shot or reverse sweep, and most importantly in crucial periods of the game when those kind of shots were not required. Mushfiq got out against Scotland in a similar way and Bangladesh lost that match eventually by six runs. Against England, Mushfiq was dismissed while trying to play a reverse sweep after getting set and against the West Indies, he unleashed a similar kind of audacious shot yet again which cost him his wicket.
Mahmudullah unable to become a hero
Skipper Mahmudullah had the chance of winning the game for Bangladesh and become a hero. He has won matches for Bangladesh from such kind of situation in his career quite a few times but this time he was unable to do so. Bangladesh needed a boundary to win the game in the last ball. Mahmudullah was in the crease with 31 runs off 23 balls and it was genuinely hoped that the captain would lead Bangladesh to a memorable victory in the world stage. But this time it did not happen as Andre Russell bowled a wide yorker length delivery outside off and Mahmudullah failed to connect it. And thus Bangladesh’s hopes were shattered.
