Casual Bangladesh batsmen surrender to England

Update : 21 Dec 2021, 03:18 PM

A clueless and poor display of batting against one of the tournament favorites England showed that Bangladesh had surrendered to defeat only after the finish of the first innings.

It was a good batting track at Sheikh Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi.

The stage was set for Bangladesh to put up a competitive total after their batsmen got some runs against Sri Lanka in the first match.

But batsmen failed miserably and exhibited below-par temperament in the whole innings.

Bangladesh needed a flying start to give the strong England batting line-up a big total to chase.

But openers Liton Das and Mohammad Naim failed yet again, getting dismissed while playing casual shots against England spinner Moeen Ali in back to back deliveries during the third over.

Out-of from Liton made yet another poor show as he got out scoring nine from eight balls.

It was the same old problem for Liton.

Playing eight-10 deliveries, scoring one or two good looking boundaries before getting out to a casual shot and eventually coming back to the pavilion shaking his head.

Liton’s confidence as a player hit rock bottom in the last game as he dropped two crucial catches as well as continuing his poor run of form.

But it seems team management has blind faith in him as he is playing again and again despite producing false starts for Bangladesh in the last seven-eight games.

It might be considered an injustice to other specialist opener Soumya Sarkar as Liton is getting matches despite repeated failures while the former got dropped after playing just one game in the tournament.

After two early wickets, Bangladesh hoped Shakib al Hasan would save them with a brilliant innings, like the one he played against England in the 2019 World Cup.

But like Liton and Naim, the left-hander too was guilty of playing a casual shot and getting caught at short fine leg.

After Shakib’s dismissal, Bangladesh middle-order started to panic and experienced duo Mushfiqur Rahim and Mahmudullah batted with a slow approach.

England bowlers just kept it simple, bowled the right line and length.

But Mushfiq and Mahmudullah were unable to handle that and boundaries had dried up.

Mushfiq was dismissed while playing his favorite, and audacious, reverse sweep, scoring 29 off 30 balls.

In a T20 game, scoring a 30-ball 29 is bad batting.

And if it comes from one of the senior most batsmen of the team, then it becomes worse.

After Mushfiq, Mahmudullah also did the same as he got out after playing 24 balls and scoring just 19.

Mahmudullah also caused an unfortunate run-out of Afif Hossain as Afif lost his wicket after a mix-up with his skipper.

As it turned out two of the most experienced batsmen for Bangladesh played 54 balls - nine overs of the whole innings - and scored 48 runs with just four boundaries.

One more thing should be mentioned - Bangladesh batsmen gave away a total of 52 dot balls in the innings.

And that sums up the Bangladesh batting.

Bangladesh looked like they gave up even before the first innings had finished and it clearly showed in the body language while bowling and fielding.

It was clueless batting, lack of temperament and improvisation from the Tigers batsmen.

And for the fans, it was painful to watch.
