Update : 15 Dec 2021, 08:07 PM

Star Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib al Hasan surpassed former Sri Lanka pacer Lasith Malinga to become the highest wicket-taker in the history of T20Is.

Shakib was one wicket away from equaling the milestone with Malinga (107) and Sunday, the Bangladesh bowler picked up two wickets to storm to top spot in the list.

Shakib now with 108 wickets is followed by Malinga in second, New Zealand pacer Tim Southee in third with 99, Pakistan legend Shahid Afridi in fourth with 98 and Afghanistan spinner Rashid Khan in fifth with 95.

The game also saw 34-year old Shakib take his international wickets tally to 600 and become the first cricketer to achieve the double of 12,000 runs and 600 wickets in international cricket.

Shakib, in Bangladesh’s opening game of the T20 World Cup against Scotland at Al Amerat Stadium, bowling his second over first removed Richie Berrington to equal the milestone with Malinga and a ball later surpassed the Lankan legend by dismissing Michael Leask.

Bangladesh dominated Scotland with the ball after choosing to bowl first and Shakib, coming hot from the just concluded Indian Premier League T20, bagged two wickets in his stipulated four overs and conceded only 17 runs.

Shakib recently became the second bowler to reach the milestone of 100 wickets in T20Is and is now the only cricketer with 1,000 runs and 100 wickets in the shortest format.

The former Bangladesh captain is on the verge of reaching another milestone as he needs just eight wickets to be the highest wicket taker in T20 World Cup history.

Shakib is at No 6 in the list with 32 wickets and in with a chance of reaching the milestone as none of the five cricketers above him are playing this edition of the T20 World Cup.

He has bagged 32 wickets in the T20 World Cup in 26 matches now.

Pakistan's Umar Gul with 35 in 24 games, Sri Lanka's Ajantha Mendis with 35 in 21, Pakistan's Saeed Ajmal with 36 in 23, Sri Lanka's Malinga with 38 in 31 and Pakistan's Shahid Afridi with 39 in 34 games are the bowlers above Shakib.
