Tamim off to Caribbean

Update : 16 Jul 2013, 04:23 PM

Bangladesh’s opening batsman Tamim Iqbal leaves Dhaka today to join his Caribbean Premier League side Saint Lucia Zouks, who purchased the hard-hitting batsmen in a players’ draft.

Tamim, who got married last month, will be accompanied by his wife Ayesha Siddiqua during the month-long tour, which apparently will also be the couple’s honeymoon.

“I always used to say,‘Ayesha, you should visit West Indies’ as it is one of the beautiful places that I have seen and to be honest, I always dreamt of taking her to the place,” Tamim told the Dhaka Tribune Tuesday.

“The timing of the tournament was spot on and I am lucky to get selected,” he added.

Only two Bangladeshi cricketers - Tamim and all-rounder Shakib al Hasan - made it into the maiden edition of the tournament, which starts from July 30.

Tamim will be playing under the captaincy of Darren Sammy, while Shakib, who was selected by the Barbados Tridents, will play under Kieron Pollard. Shakib will join his team later this month. The former Bangladeshi skipper is currently in England playing in the ongoing Friends Life Twenty20 for Leicestershire Foxes.

“Yeah, this will be the second time me and Shakib will be playing in a tournament abroad in two different teams. I am looking forward to the game against him. Hope it will be as interesting as it was in the county.

“So far, the tournament looks to be organised and all looks to be on track. They (Saint Lucia) took me in the team with expectations, so I hope I will be able to fulfill it with my performance,” said Tamim.

Tamim will first to go London and stay there for three days before heading to the Caribbean.
