Pant-Iyer counterattack gives India advantage

Tigers to start day 3 80 runs behind with all 10 wickets intact

Update : 23 Dec 2022, 07:51 PM

Bangladesh openers Nazmul Hossain Shanto and Zakir Hasan remained unbeaten at close of day two as they trail visitors India by 80 runs in the second and final Test match in Mirpur's Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium Friday.

India finished their first innings on 314, riding on superb counter-attacking batting from Rishabh Pant (93) and Shreyas Iyer (87).

But the morning session belonged to Bangladesh as experienced left-arm spinner Taijul Islam took all three wickets to fall - KL Rahul (10), Shubman Gill (20) and Cheteshwar Pujara (24).

Both the openers were given out leg before wicket while Pujara departed after a sharp low catch by Mominul Haque in silly mid-on position.

Taskin Ahmed then got the prized wicket of Virat Kohli just after the lunch break as India were under pressure on 94 for four.

It was a good delivery from Taskin angling away just outside off and the edge was taken by wicket-keeper Nurul Hasan, much to the delight of the tall right-arm fast bowler as well-set Kohli was out for 24 off 73.

But later it was the Pant-Iyer show as these two played some scintillating shots all around the park and counter-attacked Bangladesh bowling attack to take back control of the game.

Pant was looking more explosive of the two with the execution of his six hitting skills, but Iyer was equally impressive with boundaries all over the field.

Bangladesh grassed two chances given by Iyer as one was a difficult one at gully off Taskin during the 38th over of the innings.

Fielder Mehedi Hasan Miraz jumped upwards and tried a one-handed blinder but the ball slipped away from his grasp and eventually grounded.

Miraz fell awkwardly on the ground and got injured immediately as his face bumped in the ground directly when he tried to catch the ball in second attempt.

Miraz was off the field with blood pouring from his nose but later came back to the field and also bowled his off-spinners.

Later Iyer got another life and this time Nurul missed a regulation stumping chance off Shakib al Hasan's bowling.

Those two missed opportunities proved to be costly, particularly Nurul's missed stumping chance, as Pant-Iyer partnership took away a great chance from Bangladesh to take a first-innings lead.

Both Pant and Iyer fell short of the magical three-figure mark after the former gave a faint edge to the keeper while trying to cut and the latter was trapped in front while trying to sweep.

Miraz accounted for the wicket of Pant while Shakib dismissed Iyer.

Some useful contributions from the tail-enders helped India get past the 300-run mark and manage a sizeable first-innings lead of 87.

Both Shakib and Taijul took four wickets each, while Taskin played his part by taking Kohli's wicket and Miraz broke the important Pant-Iyer partnership by removing the Indian keeper.

Bangladesh will start day three 80 runs behind with all 10 wickets in hand.
