Bangladesh Test captain Shakib Al Hasan appreciated Bangladesh Cricket Board’s [BCB] decision to name Nurul Hasan Sohan as the captain of the Bangladesh T20I team for the forthcoming tour of Zimbabwe.
Shakib believed Nurul is worthy enough to get the charge and the BCB is in the right thought process.
Although BCB director and cricket operation chairman Jalal Younus stated that the national team management has come to the decision to try and test a young leader and the team against lower ranked Zimbabwe, it is widely established that the board is mulling not involving Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur Rahim at all here onwards in T20I.
It is assumed team will be led by Nurul in Zimbabwe as part of stop-gap arrangement and afterwards the charge will be handed over to ace all-rounder Shakib al Hasan. Shakib will not feature in the Zimbabwe as he has already been granted leave by BCB. There were talks that the 35-year-old could take up the role of the Tigers T20 captain replacing Mahmudullah from the upcoming Asia Cup later this year.
“I think he [Nurul] is capable and BCB thought that Sohan will be able to give a lot to Bangladesh cricket in the future which is the reason he was appointed the captain of the T20 side. I wish him all the best and I hope the upcoming Zimbabwe series will be a challenge for him which he will be able to overcome,” Shakib told the media during a commercial endorsement in Chattogram on Sunday.
Shakib when quarried about his thoughts of leading the Bangladesh T20I team, said he is not thinking about it and at the moment is focusing only on his Test leadership.
“I think it will take time for us to do well in the Test format. There is a possibility that the team will go through a transition period which is the reason it might take some time for us,” said Shakib.
